Advice needed on something…….
Tried to install Broadband on my home PC a couple of weeks ago. Half way through the installation it started looking for windows files which weren’t installed when the computer was setup so I had to abort the installation.
After that everytime I booted up I got warnings saying that registry files had been changed but it would still boot up and I could use my old dial up connection.
Then last week I couldn’t connect to the internet at all. My old man took the PC to a computer shop in town that his company uses. I got the computer back last Friday and they had told me they had corrected the problems with the registry files and it was working but I couldn’t get on the Internet. The computer then went back to the shop on Saturday and I got it back on Monday and was told they had to re-install Internet Explorer…….
So I booted it up on Monday night and discovered that they have wiped the hard drive…completely!!!
There is nothing left on it at all. No software, no documents, nothing. They took off all my MS Office software. I have lost at a conservative estimate about 1000 music tracks some of which were ones I had written and recorded myself. Hundreds of sheet music files.
I also use it for working at home and as such had 3 generations of the software I use at work on it. One of which I cant get back as the master disk is gone. I have also lost vital work files as well.
I’ve lost hundreds of utilities I’d downloaded from the internet and cant remember where I got them from. I’ve lost pictures and photographs of relatives who have passed away. I’ve lost financial documents as well.
To say I’m f*cked off is a minor understatement. So far it’s been my old man who’s dealing with them but I’m going to have to call them today.
They claim that they had to wipe the hard drive and dazzled my old man with some technical phrases but I know they’re lying. I’ve spoken to two independent IT professionals who’ve back up my opinion.
I’m seriously considering legal action against them as I simply cannot even begin to replace what has been lost.
Just wondered if anyone knew what my legal position is? Am I perfectly within my rights to seek compensation? At no time did they ever ask us if they could wipe the hard drive nor did they bother to check if we had back-ups of the files.
Any advice appreciated as I’m physically shaking with anger as I type this!!!
