Had my first problem with Mike's SSK last Saturday, overtook a 4x4 and mid manouvre there was a 'ping' and the gearshift became floppy. Fortunately i had enough speed to coast up the hill i was on and into a pub carpark (hey i've broken down in worse places! ) My initial thoughts were either a snapped selector cable (i've had this happen before) or a missing selector cable retaining clip on the bell crank (i've had this happn before too, so i carry a spare ). Upon removing the gear knob and gaiter though i discovered that one of the rose joints had sheared where it attaches to the underside of the gear selector. This is extremely annoying, mainly because the car is immobilised due to one tiny bolt shearing and to replace it you need to invert the gear selector and that means stripping out the fascia, triangular footwell panels, cubby box lids, T-Bar, rear cubby box and transmission tunnel So i ordered 2, one to fit and a spare and spent 3 hours or so stripping the car, 10 minutes replacing the sheared rose joint and 4 hours putting it all back again! Still, it ain't all bad, i managed to tighten up my handbrake handle (no more annoying red light on the dash!), re-fit my seatbelt escutcheons and have another go at my heater box. I suppose, given that i have one of the very first SSKs, it hasn't done too badly really, must be around 4/5 years old now and this is the first thing to go wrong with it, it was just annoying that something so small could cause so much trouble.

Good work Andy. Read that you'd had problems. So it was the rose joint that failed? Frustratingly simple thing as you say, but at least it was reasonably easy to rectify!

Yes, those are the ones Andy is talking about Dieter. Don't ask me why they're called "rose joints" though LOL

Yep, they're the ones. Invented by a woman named Rose maybe? Or maybe Rosie? Eh Dieter?
