Just got to get it to Emerald on the 6th March. Anyone one to come along. A small group perhaps with a chance of a power run or two who knows... If there is interest I could ask DW of the chance of a power run (after my mapping of course) Me, me me me me! ;D

Andy, does your MS stage one engine use standard cams?

Yes

So what is involved in a stage 1 engine conversion Andy? Looks as though there is plenty of scope for later developments should you wish to tread that path later...

Stage 1 is literally polished, ported and matched to the inlet and exhaust manifolds - no cams or large valves.
Stage 2 is as above, but large valves and warm/hot cams too
Stage 3 is as stage 2 but radical cams and verniers, can also include solid lifter conversion
Stage 4 i suppose would be MTBs as well - Mike doesn't offer this option.
My Stage 2 head only had large inlet valves and high lift cam - exhaust valves and cam were OE.
In answer to your question, yes there is still scope for further development, but i am a little wary about going much further with the head work - will probably go for MTBs, lightweight fly wheel* and maybe some 'warmer' cams.
/me Not too lightweight, lwfw can cause pitching when coming on or off the gas, impacting on day-to-day drivability

Oh, got loads of photos of the damaged Stage 2 head if anyone is interested - they are on a CD-ROM at home but i can Email them tomorrow (if i remember!)

Thanks for the clarification. I had looked at the range of options that Mike offered, but to be quite honest, that was quite some time ago. In answer to your question, yes there is still scope for further development, but i am a little wary about going much further with the head work - will probably go for MTBs, lightweight fly wheel* and maybe some 'warmer' cams. /me Not too lightweight, lwfw can cause pitching when coming on or off the gas, impacting on day-to-day drivability Well I can certainly understand your reticence to dabble with cams again - crikey, I would be too. BUT because the cams are the guardians at the gate of air entry into the engine, if you want to make use of MTBs you're practically bound over to use higher lift/ longer duration cams. Do we know how Mike has cut the valve seats? I guess what I am angling at is how good a base is your current stage 1 head is for subsequent power development? Probably quite reasonable I suspect - perhaps we should both try the "Cheeky cheap cam" route with 135 cams as a stepping stone to more ambitious modifications in the future?

So a gasflowing and a set of OE 135 cams = what? a stage 2? whatever, it would be a covert tune up...nobody would ever have to know! except of course the added performance would give it away

I think the difference between Stage 1 and 2 is the valves, not the cams. Therefore polished, ported and 'warm' cams would be Stage 1 + cams and yes, it would require engine surgery to be dectectable...

You're right there Neil ;D Interestingly, Andy already has the VVC-style inlet plenum used on the 135 engine - so I guess that with a subtle bit of head porting that has already been performed, 140+ should be attainable from fitting the 135 cams? FEEL the POWER of the DARKSIDE!

Sounds reasonable, i'm insured for VVC bhp output anyway.
Basically i sent through all my mods and they came back and asked about performance, so i said "about the same as a VVC"...

Rob have you had a price from Victoria yet for the 135 Cams?
I'd be very interested in it.

Bob, just to let you know that I am waiting on a 'quote' from Victoria regarding the 135 cams... Shouldn't be long, knowing her! ;D

This cam mod could be a bonus as my way of thinking the cams would look the same due to being MGR products and thus when it comes to insurance you do not need to tell them as they are std parts although a performance gain If there where any queries you can act dum as say the cams broke so you replaced them withstd parts not relising that there was a difference. There are so many options open for a std 1.8i but for now will stick with the std version specially as am having to find a new job as of may.
