Only two years to my MG's next cam-belt change service. I am thinking that I'll stay in standard class for the foreseeable future - which means that Piper cams aren't going to be an option - those vernier wheels are a complete giveaway if anyone bothered to have a look! Which got me thinking, following a conversation I was having with Roger Parker... TF135 cams. The TF135 uses a "High performance" 1.8i engine. Roger tells me after searching through the parts catalogues, that the ONLY difference between a standard 1.8i and a 135 1.8i are the cams - which have a different duration and lift. Any advantages for me? 1. They look standard - because they are, well, on TF135s anyway 2. They ought to be reasonably cheap - I'll have to ask Victoria how much she'd charge for these second hand... 3. They give 135Ps without any modification over 120Ps with the standard cams. Given that my car is already up to 133-135Bhp - the cams ought to give me a useful amount of additional power, although at the price of some low-end torque. 4. MEMS will have no problem with them. Any thoughts about this hair-brained scheme chaps?

Sounds pretty logical to me - given that there are no other physical component changes. What about the Mems though - would the older Mems have the same maps as the newer Mems?

Sounds good... wouldn't that be .... cheating??

Cheating is such a strong word Kingsley - has so many negative connetations... I prefer to call it 'doing a Chapman' Seriously though - this mod will wait a couple of years, which gives me plenty of standard class participation before going for 135 cams - at which juncture I may re-register the car as a TF135! Dave - since the standard MEMS can cope perfectly happily with Piper BP275H cams - which I presume are going to be a lot 'warmer' than the TF135 items - I don't see the 135 cams being too much of a challenge to MEMS1.9 Part of the incentive is to find out what happens: no one has done this yet! If it works, then great. If not, then no problem. ;D

Tim has 633s - the cams that Piper developed for use in conjunction with Dave Walker's Emerald...
... you should ask Tim what he thinks of his car now that the Emerald has been installed!

So how do we know that the BP275H work with a standard MGR Mems?

The BP270H were designed with MEMS1.9 in mind I gather - and a number of MGFs and Lotus Elises are pottering around on these cams. Remember that there are two different grinds of this cam? The original was superceeded because some Lotus owners complained of a lumpy idle? It wasn't actually all that bad, but what there was was all down to the fuelling and ignition map of the standard ECU. If you had an Emerald, the idle lumpiness could be "tuned out" I think that there remains quite a few owners of this set up on the Lotus BBS and SELOC forums?

Emerald..... Bloody brilliant, it really brings DVA's work to life. Goes like a train. Just got to get it to Emerald on the 6th March. Anyone one to come along. A small group perhaps with a chance of a power run or two who knows... If there is interest I could ask DW of the chance of a power run (after my mapping of course). 165+ bhp coming up sir.... with a side order of low end torque and chips.

sounds like my sort of a mod I was quoted £177 for a reprofiling of my existing cams so if the 135's come for less than that it's a bargain...methinks go for it! gasflowing and subtle different cams... this is the real darkside

I'm glad to hear all's going well, even with the tweaked Sport 160 map on the Emerald I'm not overly bothered about a power run myself, but I'd really like to come along and watch DW do his stuff. I've pencilled it into my diary - I'll have to wait until we're a bit closer to the day to see how the family stuff pans out.

Well I'm coming as I have your engine map on my PC! Muhuhuh! I was quoted £177 for a reprofiling of my existing cams so if the 135's come for less than that it's a bargain...methinks go for it! Thanks Neil. So 177 quid is the target to aim for? Okay, next time I see Victoria, I'll ask her for a quote! Hmm, Welcome to the Darkside!

Remember that Victoria is going to Stoneleigh in a couple of weeks time so even if you can't go a set of cams can readily be picked up. However, if you have to buy a head from her anyway for the porting why not get the whole caboodle, and get a head with cams in it....?

Hmm, a plan so cunning, it's got a doctorate in cunningness from the University of Cunningsville... Not sure how to pay for it at present though: the money pit, sorry, the house, needs some, er, investment
